Proposals and advice for the surfaces treatment
Depending on the location, we recommend in principle, the following proceedings:
a) Location of the furniture in the winter garden / a closed place
We recommend the use of oil or a type of wax adequate for interior furniture. There are cases when our customers have communicated to us that they have applied on the furniture an olive oil layer. Depending on the tint wanted, you can choose from colorless to dark color of walnut. Due to the fact that under these circumstances, the furniture is not exposed to rain, such a treatment has a duration similar to the one of the procedure applied on the interior furniture, the main purpose being an aesthetic one and for the avoidance of stains that appear easily on the natural wood surfaces, which can lead to the necessity of polishing.
b) Location of the furniture in a covered space with the possibility of the furniture getting wet:
Such cases are situated between a) and c) and it is recommended, in principle like in the conditions when the location looks more like case a), that is, stains can appear, but the furniture is not cleaned in the rain, to apply a layer of oil, and in the contrary case, that is when the furniture location is in covered spaces, but which do not protect very well against the bad weather conditions, to follow the maintenance instructions from item c).
c) Location in free spaces, without the possibility of protection
It is recommended that the furniture located in open air should not be treated, because the sun and rain wash out relatively quickly the applied layer of oil.
In cases when, for optical reasons, it is desired to oil the furniture, we recommend you the compliance with the following instructions and advice:
1. In case when the furniture located in open air is lubricated with a layer of oil, it will be washed out after some time, depending on the oil quality. The consequence is a stained surface, an inhomogeneous surface with tints of shadows and lights.
2. It is recommended the periodical application of a layer of oil, if it is desired to maintain a nice color (depending on the exposure rate and the oil quality 1 - 3 times a year).
3. This application of a new layer of oil will be preferably done before the previous layer was completely washed out, because only the layer of oil prevents water penetration into the wood layers, and water penetration leads to the appearance of mould fungi and silvering. A constant layer of oil prevents this.
4. You should take into account the fact that, after the application of the oil layer, the furniture is not immediately usable and a certain period of time is necessary for drying.
5. If possible, we recommend that during winter time, the furniture should be stored in a protected place, but not very dry. Teak wood should not dry too much. It is not recommended to store teak furniture in heated cellars, but rather in places where humidity is quite high. This makes the maintenance interval longer (oil is not washed out by the bad weather conditions) and the furniture should not be treated during the months of winter and it does not get the grey hue in the case when the treatment application is forgotten.
6. Due to the fact that products are traded on the market at big difference of price, we recommend to use high end products. The product used by us is of Norwegian origin and consists of oils with a high value and a long durability, but as a consequence require a few days to dry. |
