The natural ageing process of teak wood

As early as the first day of exposure in open air, the furniture begins to change: the intensity of bad weather conditions determines the speed at which the changing processes take place: in the cases when the influences of bad weather conditions are intense, the silvering process can be very advanced after only few months. In the cases when you install the furniture under a roof or a balcony where the humidity can influence directly only certain components of the furniture, you can observe that the affected part becomes grey, while the other part, the protected one, remains of the same color as in the first day of delivery.

A possibility to make sure that the silvering process should be balanced all around your furniture is to put the furniture during winter in an un-protected place, in spring the silvering process is already finished. In the cases when the teak wood furniture is installed in a winter garden, then the natural tint of wood will not disappear after tens of years. Depending on the location of the furniture we recommend different maintenance treatments, see the chapter "Proposals and advice for treatment" below.

In principle, for the furniture installed in open air, the same thing is valid as for any other object, mounted in the exterior: if you park the car in a place that covers half of it, rain stains will be on the unprotected side, while the other part will be clean.

Also a slight wrinkle can be noticed due to the ageing process, a reason why for the folding chairs re-screwing on the bolts of elbow supports may be necessary.

These ageing processes are the more difficult to stop and slow down, the bigger the influence of the bad weather conditions is on the wood. Even the best teak oil gets thinner once with the time passage and the application of a new layer is necessary in case we want to prevent the silvering process. In order to avoid disappointments, we recommend all customers that do not like a silver patina and that want to use their furniture in open air, to think well whether wooden furniture is the best choice. But if they still make up their minds for teak wood furniture, they should be aware that at least once a year a complete re-oiling of the furniture is advisable.

For these cases, we provide individual counseling.
